About This Course

In the digital age, democracy requires online spaces where citizens can freely engage with one another—socially, politically, and economically—without unnecessary and disproportionate restriction. The Digital Rights Learning Exchange is a virtual course covering the essential skills needed to become an effective advocate for a democratic digital space. This course will enable participants with an interest in technology and digital rights to learn from leading experts in the digital rights space.

This course provides practical exercises and templates to help learners apply what they've learned in this course to their own digital advocacy campaign. Discussion forums are available for learners to share ideas, strategies and feedback with each other.

Esther Mwema is an artist and a digital inequalities practitioner with expertise in internet governance, digital transformation, and innovation. She has over ten years commitment to social impact at the intersection of youth, technology, and gender, through her non-profits Digital Grassroots and SAFIGI Outreach Foundation. She also has extensive experience at the United Nations. Esther is an Open Internet leader who prioritises African feminist and decolonial practices. Esther graduated with an MSc in Inequalities and Social Science from the London School of Economics.

Uffa Modey

Uffa Modey is a software engineer, technology policy analyst and digital rights activist who established Digital Grassroots and the Nigerian Youth Internet Governance Forum to promote digital literacy and bridge inequalities in ICT. She excels in developing cutting-edge software and standards for the ethical adoption of digital technologies. Uffa has a decade of experience in community engagement for digital skills development among female students in Nigeria and the UK. She holds a Master's Degree in Cybernetics and Communications Engineering (Distinction).
